Several of the vanilla structures generate in a method essentially governed by source code, however three particular structures (Village, Bastion Remnant, and Pillager Outpost) generate as pieces joined together by Jigsaw Blocks.
These blocks can be used to create custom structures from custom pieces as well via data packs; world generation files included in the same pack can be used to control where and how often any structures generate.
Orientation
The Jigsaw Block has several orientation block states, and how it's oriented makes a big difference. In order to cause another structure piece to generate beside the piece you're working on, you'll need opposing Jigsaw Blocks at the appropriate edges of the pieces.
- Place a north-oriented Jigsaw Block somewhere on the north face of your first structure piece
- Place a south-oriented Jigsaw block on the appropriate face of the other structure piece
- Fill in the correct data in the Jigsaw Blocks' GUIs (explained below)
Up-oriented and down-oriented Jigsaw Blocks don't work this way. Their purpose is to generate structure pieces that are contained entirely within the original structure piece. An example of this is villager generation in villages. In vanilla villages, villagers don't 'spawn' upon generation - there are a bunch of Jigsaw Blocks in the ground, oriented upward; these generate tiny structure pieces that just have a matching down-oriented Jigsaw Block with a Villager standing on top amidst a couple of Structure Voids.
Jigsaw GUI
The Jigsaw GUI allows you to define its properties. These are as follows:
•Target pool
By default, this is set to minecraft:empty (i.e. nothing). This would be left as minecraft:empty if you don't want a new structure piece to generate attached to this Jigsaw Block (this type of Jigsaw use is explained below).
'Template Pools' can be defined in which you specify a list of any number of structure pieces and their random-selection weight; assigning a Template Pool in the Target pool field will cause your Jigsaw Block to try to generate a structure selected randomly (with weight) from it. You can of course use a pool that contains only one structure piece to guarantee its selection.
•Name
By default, this is set to minecraft:empty (i.e. nothing). The Name is used so that Jigsaw Blocks in other structure pieces can find this Jigsaw Block (explained below) - it's used as an identifier.
This would be left as minecraft:empty if other structure pieces shouldn't find this Jigsaw Block (this type of Jigsaw use is explained below).
•Target name
By default, this is set to minecraft:empty (i.e. nothing). This would be left as minecraft:empty if you don't want a new structure piece to generate attached to this Jigsaw Block (this type of Jigsaw use is explained below).
The Target name works together with the Target pool to find the correct part of an acceptable structure piece to generate attached to your Jigsaw. The Jigsaw Block randomly (with weight) selects a structure piece from its Target pool, then randomly selects an appropriately-facing Jigsaw Block in the chosen structure piece whose Name is set the same as your Jigsaw's Target name, and generates the chosen structure piece such that the two Jigsaw Blocks face and touch each other.
•Turns into
By default, this is set to minecraft:air. When the structure piece generates, the Jigsaw Block transforms into another block of your choice to remove itself and complete the structure.
•Joint type (up/down-oriented Jigsaw Blocks only)
By default, this is set to Rollable. When Rollable, the structure piece that generates attached to this Jigsaw Block can generate randomly rotated 0°/90°/180º/270°, around the Y-axis, anchored on the target Jigsaw Block. When set to Aligned, there is no rotation (0°).
Let's say you'd like a structure that always has a fountain in the center with a random house connected to it on its north, south, east, and west edges, forming a '+' shaped mini-village. You have your fountain structure piece built, as well as 11 different house structure pieces that can be randomly drawn from to fill the 4 'house slots'.
- The fountain itself would start with four Jigsaw Blocks - one at the north/south/east/west edges of the structure. All of them would have their Target pool set to a new Template Pool you create that lists all 11 houses.
- They would all have Name set to minecraft:empty, because Jigsaw Blocks in other structure pieces have no reason to generate your central fountain piece.
- You can arbitrarily set whichever Target name you'd like here (e.g. 'target:name' or 'custom:house'); the idea is that there will be Jigsaw Blocks in each house piece whose Name is set to the same value.
Each of the house pieces would have one Jigsaw Block at an edge - this Jigsaw block will align with one of the 4 in the fountain piece such that they face and touch each other. The Jigsaw Blocks in the house pieces would have their Target pool and Target name set to minecraft:empty, because no new structure pieces should be generated from these Jigsaws.
Each of these Jigsaw Blocks would have Name set to the same value as the Target name in the fountain's Jigsaws.

Usage [ ]
The GUI for jigsaw blocks contains the following input fields:
- Target pool
- Refers to a pool of elements the jigsaw block can draw elements from (the next template to place).
- You can define custom target pools in data packs at DataPack/data/namespace/worldgen/template_pool .
- Name of the jigsaw block.
- Defaults to minecraft:empty .
- What the jigsaw is to connect to when structure is generated from Target Pool.
- Defaults to minecraft:empty .
- What the jigsaw block turns into once the whole feature is generated.
- Defaults to minecraft:air .
- Appears only when jigsaw block is placed facing up or down.
- Contains two types of joints: Rollable and Aligned
- Rollable: When generated, the jigsaw block randomly places the targeted structure or entity within the boundary of the structure block on the same XZ axis the jigsaw block is facing. Defaults to this.
- Aligned: When generated, the jigsaw block places the targeted structure or entity directly on top of or below the jigsaw block depending on which way it faces. Useful for connecting structures or non-moving entities.
- Determines how many jigsaw block "levels" it goes through when the "Generate" button is used (ex. Piece>[Layer 1]>[Layer 2]).
- Can be set to an integer from 0 to 7. Defaults to 0.
- Determines if the next structure includes the jigsaw blocks it contains or become what its "Turns into" field is set to.
- Defaults to ON
- Can be used to generate next structure pieces with the jigsaw block.
- Uses parameters set in levels to generate the next parts of the structure.
Jigsaw blocks are used only in the generation of pillager outposts, villages, and bastion remnants; other structures use hardcoded generation. The generation of these structures begins with a template containing jigsaw blocks. Each jigsaw block then uses the following process to generate another template:
- Choose a random template from the target pool. This template contains at least one jigsaw block with the same attachment type as the block used to generate the template.
- If there are multiple such blocks, choose one at random. This gives two jigsaw blocks to be "attached".
- The template is placed so that the second jigsaw block is facing and adjacent to the first.
- Finally, both jigsaw blocks are replaced with their respective "Turns into" block.
The above process is repeated for all jigsaw blocks in the initial template, as well as any jigsaw blocks in additional templates, until no jigsaw blocks remain (or until the game decides that the structure is large enough). The process does not, however, occur when the player uses a structure block; doing so results in a structure containing jigsaw blocks.
Piston interactivity [ ]
Jigsaw blocks cannot be pushed by pistons. They also cannot be pushed nor pulled by sticky pistons.

10 blocks & items which you won't find in the Creative inventory
I think every survival player may have fantasized one time about being able to switch to Creative mode so that you could get access to all the blocks in the game.. Honestly? Sure there's something to say for getting access to everything at once but in all fairness I also think that with a game such as Minecraft there's also plenty of fun to had in playing the game vs. quickly gaining results.
Alas. even if you do get access to creative mode then don't keep your hopes up just yet because here are 10 blocks which you won't be able to find in there. Some will be obvious, obviously, but I'm sure you'll also find some things which may surprise you.

Now sure. technically this isn't a "real" block because you won't be able to actually put it into your inventory; the moment you break one of these blocks you'll end up with a normal sized bed again. Still, you can't deny the fact that this honestly is a block (as seen above). We didn't try to actually sleep in it (also because the night gets automatically skipped in my redstone world) but yah. it's one of those weird blocks :)
To place this block look forward (somewhat high up) and then use: /setblock ^ ^ ^2 minecraft:red_bed keep , this will place the foot end of the bed in front of you without destroying any existing blocks. If you want the head part then use this: /setblock ^ ^ ^2 minecraft:red_bed[part= head] keep .
The block on the left (see right arrow) is a so called jigsaw block , it's one of the new "control blocks" in 1.14. Unfortunately it's not very useful for us players because it's only used during terrain generation. It allows the terrain generator to build up a structure by adding more than one piece automagically after which the jigsaw block itself wil disappear and transform into something else (most often an air block).
You can get one of these by using the command: /give @p minecraft:jigsaw , and presto. Just type 'jigsaw' btw and the rest will fill out automatically. If you want to see this in action (sort off) then you can use a so called structure block to spawn in a pillager outpost, you'll also find a jigsaw block attached.
Speaking of which.
The structure block (see foreground, right next to my hand) is another system block but this one can actually be used by us players. And seriously: for me this block is just as important as a command block is!
So what does it do you wonder? Well.. as its name suggests the structure block can be used to save (and load) structures into your world, so roughly comparable to the (now somewhat obsoleted) schematica mod. To this end the block has 3 variants which us players can use and even a 4th variant but that is only useful for developers (because it helps with terrain generation, comparable to the jigsaw block above).
How does it work: You designate an area which you want to save (note that there's a 32x32x32 size limitation). You can either set the coordinates manually within the structure block itself or you can use so called corner blocks which you can place at the two opposite corners of the area after which the structure block can detect the size automatically. See the screenshot above for an example (notice the white outline?).
The second block is the structure void block, you can see an example in the screenshot above as well: notice the small red squares within the outlined area? If you save an area using a structure block then all the empty space around your normal blocks will be saved as air blocks. Meaning that if you load a structure within a solid area then it will replace the existing blocks with air (so an open space again). You can prevent this from happening using the structure void block.
You can get a structure block using this command: /give @p structure_block . And you can use structure_void to get the other structure block. If you want to learn more about the structure block then be sure to check out my other blog here.
If you go through the creative inventory you'll find some heads in the ' Decoration blocks ' section but guess what? Although it does contain a player head ('minecraft:player_head') this is only the Steve head. If you want to get an Alex head you'll need to address the Minecraft Head Funds 🙄
ok, ok, I am kidding here.. it's actually called the Marc's Head Format; there are several heads which got made by Mojang themselves and they allow you to use those specific heads in your game. Check this link (scroll down to the 'Mojang skin' section below) for a full overview. So to get an Alex head you'd use: /give @p player_head . Want to get an exclusive Enderman head? Couldn't be easier, just replace 'Alex' above with 'Enderman' and done!
In case you're wondering about the screenshot above. Aya is playing in adventure survival mode while I am in creative mode. Meaning so much that I can see those red icons but all Aya sees are invisible blocks (with a small outline).
As the name implies barrier blocks create. a barrier (duh! 🙄). Who would have guessed? 🤔
This allows admins to create barriers so that players can't reach those areas. In the example above Aya kept teasing me a little bit (all in good fun!) by removing those structure void blocks I showcased earlier. So to stop her I first teleported her quite a bit away and then quickly placed barrier blocks ;)
You can get a barrier block by using the command: /give @p barrier .
This is one of my favorite blocks to use if I want to create somewhat of an endless stream of mobs. Sure you can use a command block just as easily but a spawner can do something a command block can't. actually it can do several things. First it can create a random interval in which new mobs spawn, it can even keep a maximum amount of existing mobs in mind. But the feature I enjoy the most is that a spawner can also spread out the mobs and place them in randomized areas.
You can even fully customize the spawner block by using specific commands so that instead of spawning a default mob it'll spawn something custom. I once managed to design a spawner block which generated a ton of "LlamayamiKun's". What's that? You never heard of a LlamayamiKun before? Boy, you sure don't know much about Minecraft then! 😋
Ok, ok, sorry, I'm teasing ya ;) LlamayamiKun is a mob I generated and it's Aya's favorite pet. Here it is:
A llama with specific specs and as you can see it spawns with chests (full size (5)). Inside that chest is an AyanamiKun head. I'm actually quite proud of this design because I spawned the mob back in 1.13 using functions. You know: in a time when we couldn't use colors in names and lore and stuff "just like that".
To get a mob spawner you need to use: /give @p spawner .
And now we're entering my top 3, fasten your seat belts!I'm sure most of you knew this was coming sooner or later ;)
- The 'impulse' command block is the default and it executes a command once .
- The 'chain' command block is a variant which you can place 'behind' (check the arrow on the sides) another command block and it will then execute its command in sequence.
- The 'repeating' command block is pretty much the same as 'impulse' with the notable difference that it will repeat its command over and over and over and over and over and over and. over. and. ok, ok, I'll stop ;) So: many times ;)
For example: if you want to reduce lag then a repeating command block can be much more useful than a function. Why? Because when the player(s) is/are far enough away then the area with the command block will unload and so the command repetition will automatically stop thus requiring less resources. Can't easily do that with a function ;)
To get a command block you'd use: /give @p command_block .

The debug stuck is actually an enchanted stick (my resource pack made it look like a wrench, and rightfully so if you ask me) and it can be used to change the state of blocks.
Sounds pretty important, right? But what does that even mean?! Well, to put it more easy: it can change a block in a various amount of ways. For example. the block above can be turned around so that the arrow(s) will point into different directions. Or, to put this into official Minecraft terminology: the facing property of the block can be changed.
Depending on the block type it can have many properties (or none). The above (magenta) glazed terracotta has a facing property because of its pattern. A slab block has 2 properties: ' type ' and ' waterlogged '. Type determines if the slab is placed on top, bottom or is a double block whereas waterlogged will determine if the block is submerged into water (since 1.13 you no longer get air pockets when placing transparent blocks (such as a slab) underwater).
You can get the debug stick using: /give @p debug_stick .
And now for the most obscure block which you won't find in your creative inventory.This banner is so dangerous and plain out ominous that there isn't even a command to get it directly! The only way to get this block is to defeat a pillager patrol or to manually construct a command which gives you a banner with all the right properties applied to it (and you'll have to forgive me because I didn't feel like reverse engineering this one just yet).
To my knowledge this is also the first item that actually uses a different color (and the 'bold' property) for its name rather than the usual defaults of white, cyan (= enchanted item) and magenta (= special system item).
And it's special ;) The leader of a pillager patrol is usually wearing this to denote that he's the leader. If you manage to kill him it will always drop the banner (not affected by the looting enchantment), others in the patrol will try to grab it so that they become the leader and well.. it denotes the ominous pillagers which are new in Minecraft 1.14. Of course you'll also get the 'Bad Omen' effect applied to you but that's a whole different story :)

Не могу сказать, что стало понятнее. Но давайте выслушаем объяснение разработчиков. Тома „Profmobius“ Гимбретьер так объяснил, что представляет собой блок Jigsaw:
Это соединительный блок, позволяющий создавать конструкции из мелких шаблонов. «Target pool» относится к набору элементов, которые может использовать блок Jigsaw (т.е. следующий элемент, который будет установлен). «Attachement type» — это название блока Jigsaw. Один блок Jigsaw может быть связан с другими блоками Jigsaw по этому имени. «Turn into» — это блок, в который превратится блок Jigsaw, когда всё будет размещено.
Стало понятнее? Честно говоря ненамного. Поэтому позволю высказать такое предположение.
Думаю, этот блок будет использоваться в связке с конструкционными блоками для создания составных строений, которыми, к примеру, являются деревни.
Т.е. будет набор домиков, соответствующих тому или иному типу деревеньки, которые будут объединены в отдельный пул элементов, из которых будут складываться целые деревни. Т.е. с каждой стороны домика будет расположен такой блок, который будет вызывать установку другого следующего домика.
Так это или нет, узнаем позднее. Мои эксперименты с конструкционными блоками пока не увенчались успехом.

Jigsaw blocks are not available in the creative inventory. They can be obtained by using the pick block control, or by using various commands such as /give @s jigsaw .
Jigsaw blocks are included when a player uses a structure block to spawn certain structures that use jigsaw blocks for generation.
